New Student

This class of kindergartners has missed 5 days of school.  My report cards are due Wednesday, but tomorrow I’m getting a new student.  I haven’t seen this group since Wednesday, so they have no clue.  I like to talk about being a welcoming friend before we get a new student.  No time for that.   I want to take the time to make her feel welcome.  I need to help her learn our procedures.   I have a list of many assessments I’m supposed to complete.  I’d hoped to put the class on auto pilot, and finish these.  This is really bad timing.
Tonight a little girl is going to bed, feeling excited,  a little scared, and probably a little unsure if her teacher will be nice.  She might be worried if she’ll have a friend.  She probably wishes she didn’t have to move to a new house.  I bet she misses her old friends.  She doesn’t know my pressures I need to remember hers.

  1. Teachers are the best at re-prioritizing on the fly. Your heart is evident in the last sentence ...I need to remember hers. Students seems to adjust better than adults. Hopes and prayers for a peaceful day.

  2. Hoping that tomorrow goes smoothly- that your new friend adapts quickly and that she makes friends who can help her and free you up to get all of your assessments done. If I was that little giro's mom reading this, I'd be so grateful that my child was going into the classroom of such a caring teacher! Good luck!

  3. Because you are aware of her needs, her day will go well. Sounds like she will have a great teacher!

  4. This is a lucky little girl who is getting a teacher who is thinking about her needs before she even meets her. It's always difficult to get a new student at this point in the year. Hope you both have a good day.

  5. Great thinking, "She doesn’t know my pressures I need to remember hers." I work in a school with 40% transience. I think we need to remember that statement more often or post by our hallways. It gets hard with all the comings and goings to make them all as special as they should be.
