I had some time between two doctor’s appointments today; I
decided my table needed some live flowers.
One of my favorite local shops was
near I went in and chose my flowers. I had
more time so I wandered around the store.
I came upon a display of garden ornaments. My eyes landed upon a cement mermaid.
I was immediately taken
back to Christmas in the early 1960s. My
dad was not a man of many needs. He
often joked when someone asked him what he wanted for Christmas, “a mermaid”. Finally one year one of my uncles purchased a glass
aquarium decoration of a mermaid. I
could even see the glass green olive jar filled with water that held the joke. I stood soaked in memories. I
smiled and paid for my purchases.
This evening as I sat thinking of the old memory of my dad I’ve
decided that mermaid needs to find a home in my flower garden. If it’s still available and not too pricy I’ll
buy it next week when I go for my follow up appointment. If not, I’ll still have my memories.
I am thinking that mermaid belongs in your flower garden so I am hoping that it is still available next week!
